Our Story

We are proud to have built over 70 houses across Grey and Bruce since 1987

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by Millard and Linda Fuller.  The ongoing involvement of former United States President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn has brought widespread awareness to our organization.  Habitat now works in every province and territory in Canada and in more than 70 Countries around the world.

In 1987, a group of citizens, concerned about the lack of affordable housing in Grey and Bruce counties, heard about the work of Habitat for Humanity International and decided to initiate a local Habitat chapter in Grey/Bruce.  These dedicated volunteers built the first house in Owen Sound in 1988 taking out personal loans to fund the cost over 35 years. Over 70 houses have been built throughout Grey and Bruce.

At Habitat Grey Bruce We Are...

A Non-Profit Home Builder

We have built 77 homes in Grey and Bruce Counties since our start in 1987.

A Charity

Donations fuel our Mission.

A Micro-Financer

We finance the purchase of the homes we build with a zero-down payment, zero interest, 20-year term mortgage making homeownership both attainable and affordable.

A Community Partner

We seek to partner with anyone who resonates with our Mission.

A Social Enterprise Retailer

Our 3 ReStores sell new and gently-used building materials and other products; proceeds cover 100% of Habitat's administrative costs - so every dollar donated goes directly to homebuilding.

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is a non-profit corporation with an Affiliate agreement with Habitat for Humanity Canada. People in our community and all over the world partner with Habitat to build or improve a place they can call home.  Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.  They are given the opportunity to thrive so to build a better life for themselves and their children.
